Authorities in Cuenca have responded after a video circulated showing a traffic officer using force while detaining a taxi driver at a busy intersection.

The footage shows the driver on the sidewalk next to his taxi while the officer restrains him, placing a knee on his neck. The scene drew concern from bystanders, who questioned whether the level of force used was excessive.
According to municipal officials, the incident began after the driver committed a traffic violation and failed to comply with an order to stop. They say the driver attempted to flee and, along with a companion, physically confronted officers.
The officer involved reported injuries to his left hand and said the restraint was necessary to prevent the driver from escaping.
Police were called to the scene and took the driver into custody. The injured officer was transported to a medical center for evaluation.
