A man and a woman were injured in an armed attack early Friday morning, May 1, in the parish of Ricaurte, north of Cuenca.

The incident unfolded around 2:00 a.m. near F Street and 25 de Marzo Avenue, where multiple gunshots were reported by nearby residents. According to witness accounts, unknown assailants opened fire on a private vehicle carrying the two victims.

After being struck by the gunfire, the vehicle continued for about 50 meters before crashing into a house. The situation was initially treated as a traffic accident, and personnel from the Municipal Mobility Company responded, evacuating the injured.

The nature of the incident became clear later when National Police officers arrived and located four bullet casings on the roadway. The area was secured, and specialists from the Criminalistics Unit collected ballistic evidence and documented the scene.

The injured were identified as Beatriz A. and Paúl L. Authorities noted that Paúl L. has a prior record that includes robbery, illicit association, and possession of unauthorized weapons.

Investigators conducted interviews with residents and began reviewing security camera footage in an effort to reconstruct what happened. Personnel from Dinased also joined the operation as the investigation moves forward.

The shooting has added to growing concern in Cuenca, where similar violent incidents have been reported in different parts of the city this year.
