Taxi drivers in Azuay are pushing for a fare review and compensation measures, warning they may suspend service if rising fuel prices continue to go unaddressed.

Patricio Padilla, president of the United Front of Taxi Drivers of Azuay, said a final decision could come in the next few days as pressure builds across the sector.

Drivers say the situation has become increasingly difficult to sustain, with fuel prices climbing steadily in recent months and driving up daily operating costs.

“We are considering halting operations because fuel prices are rising exorbitantly every month,” Padilla said.

The union has requested a meeting with Mayor Cristian Zamora and Governor Xavier Bermúdez to discuss possible solutions. Their proposals include revisiting compensation mechanisms and updating current fare structures to reflect the higher costs.

Padilla noted that previous negotiations on transportation compensation took place about a year ago in Quito, but said those measures no longer reflect current conditions. He added that the Cuenca union was not involved in those earlier talks.

He emphasized that the goal is not only to raise concerns but to find workable solutions as operating conditions continue to tighten.
