Police in Cuenca have arrested multiple individuals suspected of carrying out extortion schemes targeting local residents through messaging apps.

Authorities from the Unidad Nacional Antisecuestros y Extorsión (UNASE) reported the capture of several suspects linked to separate extortion cases in the city.

In one case, a victim received threats via WhatsApp demanding a payment of $1,000 in exchange for not harming him or his employees. The messages allegedly came from individuals claiming ties to criminal groups.

In a second operation, police arrested two women in the Totoracocha neighborhood. Investigators say their victim was also threatened through WhatsApp, with demands for money to prevent harm to her and her family. Under pressure, the victim made multiple payments.

During the investigations, officers gathered key evidence, including records of financial transfers and mobile phones believed to have been used in the crimes.

Authorities say this information will be used to strengthen the cases and identify any broader networks involved.

Officials are calling on residents to report extortion attempts immediately, emphasizing that early reporting allows authorities to activate protection protocols and intervene more effectively.
