Cuenca is gearing up for a busy four-day Labor Day holiday, with a packed schedule of cultural, recreational, and food events running from April 30 through May 3. The long weekend is expected to draw both local residents and visitors looking to explore the city without leaving town.
The program begins Thursday evening with live music, as Trío la Comarca takes the stage at a bar near Puente Roto. The performance sets the tone for a weekend built around music, arts, and public gatherings across multiple neighborhoods.
Friday brings one of the central events of the holiday, the seventh edition of the Miski Shimi storytelling festival. The gathering focuses on oral tradition and performance, transforming a historic venue into a space for live narratives and cultural exchange. At the same time, El Recreo Park becomes a hub for daytime activities, including a free drawing workshop and later a soccer skills event, both aimed at families and younger participants.
As the day shifts into evening, attention returns to Puente Roto, where a live DJ set will anchor a public event designed to bring people together in an open-air setting.
Throughout the weekend, several multi-day activities will run in parallel. A crafts and cultural exhibition titled “Andean Ecuador” will be held at the Municipal Crafts Center, while an antiquities tour in Challuabamba offers a different kind of experience focused on collectibles and historical items. Recreational competitions, including soccer challenges and a bicycle balance event, will continue daily at El Recreo Park.
Saturday expands the program with activities for different age groups. Senior-focused events will take place in the morning, followed by a food and cultural gathering at the November 3 Market, where local cuisine and live performances will share the spotlight. In the evening, the schedule turns more festive, with a children’s theater production, a fireworks display tied to the Day of the Crosses, and a large concert featuring mariachi music at the Casa de la Cultura Theater.
The holiday wraps up Sunday with one of the most anticipated food events: the Cuencano Potato Locro Festival. Held in the city center, the festival highlights a traditional dish that remains central to local cuisine.
Beyond scheduled events, city markets are expected to play a major role throughout the weekend. Each offers a different experience, from prepared foods to fresh produce and regional specialties, making them a key stop for visitors exploring Cuenca during the holiday.
With activities spread across the city, the Labor Day weekend is shaping up as a mix of tradition, entertainment, and community events, giving both residents and visitors plenty of ways to take part.
