Cuenca’s municipal water company is moving ahead with a broader rollout of “smart” water meters after completing its initial testing phase.
The pilot program placed the devices in selected businesses and properties in the Industrial Park to evaluate performance. With that stage now complete, installation is being extended to new homes, buildings, and condominiums for customers who choose to request the service. Existing property owners are not required to switch.
The new meters use ultrasonic technology to measure water consumption with greater precision. Instead of relying on manual readings, they collect usage data in real time and transmit it directly through antennas to the billing system.
The aim is to ensure that customers are billed based on their actual consumption rather than estimates. The system also gives users access to an app that tracks when water use is highest, helping identify unusual patterns that may point to leaks.
