Rainfall is expected to persist in the upper areas of Cuenca through Wednesday, April 29, bringing a high risk of landslides and rising rivers.

The heaviest rain is forecast for the highlands of Azuay, particularly around Cuenca, with additional rainfall also affecting coastal areas of the province. Conditions are already impacting key routes, especially the Cuenca–Molleturo–El Empalme road, where drivers have reported worsening travel due to landslides and debris.

• Rain expected through April 29 in upper Cuenca region
• High risk of landslides and river swelling
• Cuenca–Molleturo–El Empalme road among the most affected

Travel conditions are being complicated by fog, unstable terrain, and the presence of rocks and mud on the roadway. The route, which connects Cuenca with Guayaquil, has seen increasing difficulty for vehicles moving through the Cajas area.

Authorities warn of several potential hazards during this period, including water accumulation, falling trees, reduced visibility due to fog, electrical activity, and rising water levels.

The weather pattern is not limited to Azuay. Rain is also expected across other inter-Andean provinces, including Carchi, Imbabura, Pichincha, and Loja.

The conditions are being driven by moisture moving in from the Amazon basin, combined with atmospheric instability and local geographic factors such as elevation and daytime heating.

Residents and drivers are being urged to remain cautious as the wet conditions continue.
