Traditional dances from across Ecuador will come together on one stage in Cuenca as part of the third edition of the “Festive Dances of Ecuador” gala.
The event is scheduled for April 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Alfonso Carrasco Hall of the House of Culture, Azuay Branch. Organized within the Rukuyaya Fest International Festival, the performance will feature nine choreographed pieces presented in pairs, with a total runtime of about two hours.
Five groups will take part:
- GAD Baños
- Illapa Danza y Tradición
- Yawarmanta Wawkikuna
- Danza Intercultural Pura
- Ecuador Llakta Killa
The program highlights dances inspired by celebrations from the Sierra, Coast, and Amazon regions, drawing on traditions from places such as Otavalo, Cayambe, Saraguro, Chimborazo, and parts of Azuay.
Each performance is built on prior research into the origins of the celebration it represents, including its characters, clothing, music, steps, and symbolism. That research is then translated into a stage presentation designed to make the meaning of each tradition more accessible to the audience.
Among the featured pieces are Taita Carnaval de Cañar and Yamor, a celebration tied to the corn harvest in Otavalo that blends pre-Hispanic rituals dedicated to Pachamama with later Catholic influences.
This year’s edition focuses on groups based in Cuenca, aiming to showcase local interpretations of national traditions and bring them closer to audiences who may not experience these festivities in their original settings.
The gala is open to the public, with admission set at $3, and is intended to create a shared cultural space for all ages to connect with Ecuador’s traditions.
