A serious traffic accident on the Cuenca–Molleturo–El Empalme road left one person dead and caused major disruption late Tuesday morning.

  • Crash occurred around 11:14 a.m. near kilometer 92
  • Five vehicles involved, including three pickup trucks and two cars
  • Driver of a black Hyundai confirmed dead
  • Rain and fog reported in the area

The collision took place in the Tamarindo sector under poor weather conditions, with rain and low visibility contributing to the situation. Among the vehicles involved was a pickup truck bearing the logos of the Azuay Prefecture, along with two additional pickups, a car, and the black Hyundai.

Emergency crews confirmed the death of the Hyundai’s driver at the scene. Other injured individuals were attended to as responders worked to manage the aftermath.

Traffic was temporarily suspended as a precaution while emergency services handled the situation. Congestion in the area made access difficult for first responders, slowing their arrival to the crash site.

Units from the Ecuadorian Transit Commission and the National Police were deployed to secure the area and assist with the response.
