Health authorities in Ecuador have activated a nationwide epidemiological alert following the confirmation of the country’s first case of the Clade Ib variant of mpox, a strain considered more transmissible than previous versions of the virus.
The case was confirmed on April 2 through genomic sequencing conducted by the National Reference Laboratory, allowing officials to identify the specific variant and respond quickly.
The alert signals increased concern among public health officials, as Clade Ib has been linked to a higher rate of person-to-person transmission. In response, the Ministry of Public Health (Ecuador) has ordered enhanced surveillance across the country, particularly at hospitals, clinics, and points of entry.
Authorities have also launched contact tracing efforts to identify and monitor individuals who may have been exposed, while coordinating with international health organizations for updated guidance.
Mpox is a viral disease caused by an orthopoxvirus, the same family as smallpox. It can spread through close physical contact with infected individuals, including prolonged household contact and, in some cases, intimate contact. Transmission from animals to humans is also possible.
Early symptoms can resemble common respiratory illnesses, making detection more difficult. Patients may experience fever, fatigue, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, and respiratory symptoms such as cough or congestion. A skin rash typically develops later and is considered one of the defining signs of the disease.
Health officials are urging the public to remain alert, practice good hygiene, and seek medical attention if symptoms appear. People are also advised not to self-medicate and instead visit authorized health centers for evaluation.
Although most cases resolve within a few weeks, authorities warn that complications can occur, particularly in vulnerable individuals.
The alert in Ecuador comes amid ongoing global monitoring of the Clade Ib variant. World Health Organization previously declared an international health emergency over mpox in 2024, as cases spread beyond initial hotspots.
Officials say the early detection of this case provides an opportunity to contain the virus before wider transmission occurs, but stress that vigilance will be key in the coming weeks.
