Cuenca is marking Holy Week with a special nighttime lighting program that highlights some of its most iconic churches and heritage buildings, transforming the historic center into a focal point for both reflection and tourism.

The initiative, organized by the Iluminar Foundation in coordination with the municipal government, runs through April 5. Each evening from 7:00 p.m. to midnight, key landmarks across the city are being illuminated to enhance their architectural and cultural presence during one of the most important religious periods of the year.

Among the sites included in the program are the Church of the Tabernacle, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the Church of Saint Alphonsus, and the Municipal Palace. These locations are central to Cuenca’s identity and play a major role in Holy Week traditions.

The lighting installations are designed to reinforce the atmosphere that defines the city during this period, blending religious observance with cultural appreciation. The effort also supports tourism, as Cuenca typically sees a noticeable increase in visitors during Holy Week, particularly in and around the historic center.

Local authorities say the project is part of a broader strategy to revitalize public spaces and encourage pedestrian activity. By drawing residents and visitors into the city center during the evening hours, the program aims to create a more engaging and accessible environment while showcasing Cuenca’s architectural heritage.

In addition to the visual impact, the illuminated landmarks serve as gathering points for families, tourists, and parishioners attending religious services and traditional events throughout the week.

Organizers are encouraging visitors to explore the area, take part in the experience, and share it on social media, while also respecting the historic sites and maintaining proper conduct in public spaces.

With increased foot traffic expected through the weekend, the illuminated cityscape is set to become one of the defining features of Holy Week in Cuenca this year.
