Hundreds of Catholic faithful took part in the Procession of the Steps in Cuenca on the evening of March 31, marking one of the city’s most significant Holy Week traditions.
The procession moved through the Historic Center, beginning near La República Park and concluding at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Participants walked through the streets in a solemn display of faith, many dressed in purple and black to symbolize mourning.
The Procession of the Steps represents the final moments of Jesus Christ’s journey, from his encounter with Pontius Pilate to his crucifixion. Along the route, religious images—considered historical and cultural treasures—were carried from local churches and displayed to the public.
As the procession advanced, organizers shared historical details about the sculptures and their significance, adding an educational dimension to the event.
The tradition, which dates back to the mid-20th century, was revived three years ago and has since regained prominence as part of Cuenca’s Holy Week calendar. It continues to attract participation from both urban and rural communities, reflecting its broad cultural and religious importance.
The event is one of several religious activities taking place in Cuenca during Holy Week, a period that draws large crowds and highlights the city’s strong Catholic heritage.
