A hailstorm struck Cuenca on the afternoon of March 28, leaving streets flooded and covered with ice in several parts of the city, particularly in the San Sebastián sector.
The storm was accompanied by moderate rainfall, with more than 35 millimeters recorded in less than an hour. The combination of rain and hail led to significant water and ice accumulation on roadways, creating difficult driving conditions and disrupting mobility across affected areas.
Among the main impacts:
- Flooded streets in multiple sectors
- Ice buildup on road surfaces
- Traffic disruptions due to slippery conditions
Despite the intensity of the storm, no damage to homes was reported.
In response, crews carried out drainage cleaning in key areas to help water flow more efficiently. Work focused on locations such as 10 de Agosto Avenue and Pichincha Avenue, where debris had clogged storm drains. Ice accumulation was also reported along sections of the tram line near the Yanuncay station.
Authorities maintained monitoring of conditions throughout the event and coordinated response efforts across agencies to manage the situation and reduce risks to the public.
The storm follows a series of recent weather events in Cuenca, as rainfall continues to affect different parts of the city.
