A judge in Azuay has ordered pretrial detention for two additional suspects in connection with the violent death of a man in Cuenca, bringing the total number of people under investigation to five.
The case stems from an incident on February 17 in the Quinta Chica neighborhood, where 43-year-old Ángel A. died following an assault during the Carnival holiday period. Authorities confirmed that the two individuals will remain in custody while the investigation continues, while three other suspects face alternative measures.
The decision follows mounting pressure from the victim’s family and community members, who held vigils and demonstrations ahead of the latest hearing, demanding stronger legal action and accountability.
According to police reports, the incident began after a vehicle carrying Ángel A. and his relatives allegedly struck a dog near their home. The situation escalated quickly when a group of individuals believed to be connected to the animal confronted them.
Witness accounts indicate that objects such as stones and bottles were thrown at the vehicle, and the confrontation turned violent. Ángel A. was reportedly attacked by several individuals, while a 70-year-old woman was also injured.
Emergency services were requested but did not arrive at the scene, leading those present to transport the injured to a hospital using a private vehicle.
Authorities reported that Ángel A. suffered multiple injuries, including wounds to the head and chest. Medical personnel later confirmed that he went into cardiac arrest and could not be revived.
The injuries sustained during the assault are believed to have contributed directly to his death.
With five individuals now under investigation, the case remains active as prosecutors continue to gather evidence and determine responsibility.
The decision to impose additional pretrial detention marks a significant development in the case, which has drawn strong reactions locally and renewed calls for justice from the victim’s family and community.
